Hot packs(hydrocollator pack) def, procedure, effect &uses, indications, contraindications


 hot packs are the packs which are immersed in a apparatus called hydrocollator, they provide superficial moist heat to the part where applied Or externally to an injured body part to relieve inflammation or directly on exposed area that needs treatment

Procedure:- 

They are stored in a thermostatically controlled water bath inside the equipment, they contain the substance which absorb heat like silica or gel, temperature inside the hydrocollator ranges between 65-80°c, Aim of hydrocollator pack is to rise the body temperature at 45-45°c, hydrocollator pack are available in various sizes & shapes it is chosen on the basis of area treated, Packs are taken out of apparatus by means of tongs and wrapped inside a towel 6-8 layers of towel is made around pack, total treatment time is around 8-10 minutes. 

Indications:-

pain, muscle spasm, bursitis, inflammatory conditions, adhesions. 

Contraindications:- 

Impaired skin sensation, open wounds, recent hemorrhage, skin allergy, impaired circulation. 

Effects and Uses:-

Effects on muscular spasm:- moist heat provided by the hydrocollator pack is beneficial for relieving the muscular spasm. 

Local ride in temperature:- it has many effects including increased circulation, relieving spasm & thus relieving pain heat transferred by conduction from hot pack to skin. 

Increase of local circulation:- it provides fresh supply of blood and nutrition, it reduces waste products of metabolism from that area. 

Skin and connective tissue:- skin become supple and elastic of connective tissue is also increased when combined with stretching. 

Relieve of pain:- pain relief and hot pack application occur due to decreased nerve conduction velocity may be dut to sedative. 

Pain relief may be associated with relieve of muscle spasm & increase in joint range of motion

Advantages:- easy to apply, available in various shapes & size, comfortable & readily available for home use, short use of clinician time

Disadvantages:- Equipment is big require more space, so much of water is required, tendency to cause skin rash.
