Interferential therapy def, method, physiological effects of ift, indications & Contraindications

Interferential current is the resultant current produced when 2 or more alternating currents are applied simultaneously at the point of intersection in a given medium, it is a form of electrical treatment in which a medium - frequency currents are used to produce low frequency effect

Basic principles:-

Ift depends upon principles of interferential effect of 2 medium frequency current crossing patients tissue to produce lowest frequency effect Example:- one current is A= 4000 HZ & B circuit=3900HZ 2currents applied at crossing point beat frequency current set up Amplitude is modulated and that is 100 Hz                                       Main advantage-->effects are produced in tissues where required                                                                Principles of decrease in pain--> by gate control therapy & stimulated release of pain reducing substance ( endorphins & encephalin)

                                                                                           Method

Skin must be clean & clear & washed if any skin lesions covered by petroleum jelly, electrode be placed in such a way that crossing point of 2current lie above (or) around affected area, suitable frequency, spectrum mode like triangle, rectangule, trapezoid, select base, Upper frequency, increase power gently untill the patient can tolerate, difference in current in both channels 1,2  because due to resistance in body where 2 current pass, approximate treatment frequency selected 80-100hz rhythmic to relieve pain, After 15min treatment intensity to minimum switch off mains & disconnect electrode.

                                                                                         Physiological Effects of IFT :-

depends upon- Magnitude of current, type of mode used, frequency range used, electrode positioning.

Relief of pain:    increase in local circulation by either local pumping effect of stimulated muscles, autonomic nerve and this blood vessels help removing chemicals from local area. A frequency of 80-100 hz rhythmic chosen, in order to activate descending pain suppression system a frequency of 15 hz required, stimulation of small diameter fiber release of endogenous opiate at spinal level, blocking physiological of pain modulation by IFT

Motor Stimulation:- if IFT used frequency between 1&100 hz normal innervated muscle mode to contract, At low frequency twist produced between 5& 20hz partial tetany from 30-100hz tetanic contraction, All range muscle  Contractions when rhythmic frequency of 1-100hz, muscle contraction with  little sensory stimulation & in deeply placed muscle example:- pelvic floor, stimulation of both voluntary & smooth muscle fibers, Faradism can only stimulate voluntary component.

Absorption of exudates:- frequency of 1-10hz rhythmic so rhythmical pumping produced by muscle contraction, and effect on autonomic nerve affect diameter of blood vessels & circulation both these factors help absorb exudates & reduce swelling

Indications and Contraindications:-

sports medicine to decrease pain oedema, stress incontinence patient electrode on lower abdomen & inner thigh contraction of pelvic floor, low back pain, periarthritis shoulder, Osteoarthritis knee, absorption of exudates, stress incontinence                                                         contraindications:- General conditions-fever or hyperpyrexia, hypertension, Anemia, severe Renal cardiac failure, epileptic patient s, non- cooperative patient                                                                 local conditions- open wounds, recent fracture s, skin grafts, severe edema, hairy surface, mental in part, malignant growth, loss of sensation, hypersensitive.                                                                                                                                      Thank you
