Foetal Development

 It is the process in which a Human embryo/ foetus gestates during pregnancy from fertilization untill birth. 
Period of the Foetus - From 9th week till Birth.


 The Zygote Month - 1
  • Fertilized egg reaches the uterus & attaches itself to the uterus 
  • Cell multiplication begins
  •  Internal organs & circulatory system begins to form
  • Cell division takes place & at the end of 2weeks the Zygote is the size of a 'pin- head'. 
  • Heart begins to beat
  • Small bumps show the beginning of Arms & legs. 
Month - 2 (zygote) 
  • At 5weeks, the embryo is 1/4 inch long 
  • All major organ systems develop
  • The placenta & umbilical cord develops. 
  • Amniotic fluid surrounds the baby
  • Face & limbs take stage
Month - 3 (the foetus) 
  • The foetus is about 1inch long
  • Nostrils, Mouth, lips, teeth buds & eyelids form
  • Fingers & toes are almost complete
  • Eyelids are fused shut
  • All internal organs are present but aren't ready to function
  • The genital organs can be recognised as Male Or female
Month - 4 ( the foetus) 
  • Foetus is 3inch long,weight 5 ounces
  • The baby is covered with a layer of thick, downy hair called 'LANUGO'
  • It's heart beat can be heard clearly
  • The women feels the baby's first kick
  • The baby can suck thumb, swallow & hiccup. 
Month 5 (the foetus) 
  • The foetus is about 6inches long & weight 4-5 oz. 
  • A protective coating called 'Vernix' begins to form on baby's skin
  • Hair, eyelashes & eyebrows appears
  • Organs keep maturing
  • Foetus is very active
  • The eyes can open & blink
Month 6 (the foetus) 
  • The foetus is 8-10 inch & weight 4-5 oz
  • The baby's lungs are filled with amniotic fluid & it starts breathing motions
  • Fat starts depositing under the skin
Month 7 (the foetus) 
  • Foetus is 10-12 inches long & weights about 1-2 ponds 
  • Foetus is active & then rests
  • The baby now uses the 4senses of Vision, hearing, taste & touch. 
Mouth - 8 ( the foetus) 
  • The foetus is 14-16 inches long & weights 2-3 pounds
  • Layers of fat are piling on
  • Foetus may reach to noises with a jerking action
Mouth - 9 ( the foetus) 
  • Foetus is about 17-18 inches long & weights 5-6 pounds
  • Skin is smooth because of the fat
  • Baby's movement slows down due to lack of room
  • Lightening occurs when the baby drops in the pelvis.

Humidification, types, methods, supplies, indications.

 Air is moistened because it is passed through the water vapour, Patient is asked to inspire the air by face mask or by the mouth piece.  • Normally air passing through nose& pharynx is continuously moistening the respiratory mucous, if this is inefficient cilial action is impaired & secretions are viscid so need of humidifier to loosen viscid & thick secretions.  • Humidification is moistening of air & gases, this is normal function of upper respiratory tract if this is inefficient then artificial humidifier is required Indications - 1) Patient with tracheostomy/ endotracheal tube   2) patient with oxygen mask       3) when thick secretions Choice of humidifier Ultrasonic type - patient with dry gas Disposal type - patient with respiratory failure like in chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema  Method Humidification given by wide boring tube,,,,, short period given before chest clearance done for patient who is not intubated but breathe freely.
